REVIEWED: American Inter-Continental University Fashion Show 2012

This time last week on a cold, rainy December evening, I was lucky enough to be at the American Inter-Continental University Fashion Show held in Marylebone, London. This evening of flowing champagne, luxurious goodie bags and funky music laid centre stage for the students’ work. And what a fantastic show it was.

‘Upcycle’ was the theme; not just recycling, but upcycling. According to Upcycle Magazine, ‘Upcycling is taking an item that is no longer needed or wanted and giving it new life as something that is either useful or creative. This seemingly basic concept has sparked an exciting revolution with this generation.’ This ‘excitement’ injected itself into the show through surprising sparks of colour (yellow paint anyone?), ingenious re- appropriation of fabrics and an organic yet industrial colour-palette.

Designs were fresh, surprising, and paradoxically forward-looking, even though many garments were made out of old, dis-used fabrics.

For now, I’ll leave you with some of my favourite images from this amazing night…
