All White on the Night?

This article is also published on The Daily Touch HERE

It’s no secret that white is big news for Spring. Right now, the only white on my mind is the snow outside my window (love British Spring), but trust me, white is going to be HUGE.

But, there’s also no denying that white is a tricky colour to wear. Too flouncy and lacy, and you’ll look like the proverbial virginal bride. Too tight and PVC, and people will mistake you for a surgeon. And then there’s always the worry people will think you’re off to karate class. No pressure then.

White has an annoying habit of making the wearer look like a meringue.

The trend for white is all-out. It’s brazen, it’s unashamed, and it’s head-to-toe. But it needn’t leave you looking like the corpse bride- the key to working white this Spring is to play with textures, layer abbreviated shapes and, most importantly, have fun. Here are my top tips for making sure you’re all white on the night (or day) this season…

1. PLAY WITH TEXTURE

Embellishments, laser cuts and studs are all good for working the white. Laser cut white leather looked amazing at Valentino- keep white cutting and modern rather than vintage.

2. FLASH SOME FLESH

A cropped white top under a boxy white blazer makes for a refreshing pairing this season. Take a look at Balmain for some crop top inspiration if you’re not convinced by this admittedly hit-and-miss trend. Another option is a white sheer blouse, layered over a white (not black, please) bra for an evening look that sits on the sophisticated side of sexy.

3. KEEP IT STREAMLINED

Figure skimming cuts and tailoring are a must. Nothing says ‘meringue’ more than a flouncy, lacy white skirt or dress. Opt for a structured white blazer that borders on looking like a box, and you’re along the right lines. River Island’s tux style blazer (£45, riverisland.com) is perfect. Layer over a white dress for a sophisticated evening look.

4. TEAM WITH NUDE ACCESSORIES

Black anything is too much for white clothes, so steer clear of your standard black handbag. Topshop’s Winged Lady Tote Bag in Bone is the perfect ticket to accessorising a wonderful white outfit.

5. STEP AWAY FROM THE BLING

White makes enough of a statement on its own, so give bold necklaces and earrings a wide berth. Go au natural with bare arms and legs. Which leads me on to another point- for heaven’s sake, don’t ruin your beautiful white ensemble with matte black tights. Judging by the weather outside, you might need to give it a few weeks and wait for the temperature to return from its current sub-zero state…

6. WHITE STILETTOS ARE FOR THE BRAVE

I never thought I would see the day when white leather stilettos were actually in fashion, and not condemned to a county somewhere East of London. But, alas, the white stiletto has been given the fashionistas seal of approval for this season. However, if you’re not quite sure you can pull them off (I definitely can’t), opt for a chunky, futuristic white shoe boot instead. As seen at Fendi, white shoes needn’t be dodgy…

White can very easily be tacky. But, get it right, and it will reward you. Wear it with caution…
